I don’t know about you, but when I first started my vegan diet I found myself in the habit of eating a lot of plant based foods (vegan in this case). For example, pizza. Fast food. Lunch at a restaurant. And before you know it, I’m craving pizza or a burger. It took me a while to figure out that I could change my habits to something similar to what I was used to.
Of all the things to switch to, the switch to veganism has to be one of the easiest. It’s something most people will go through at some point in their life. And it took me awhile to learn this because it feels like we have a habit of eating meat, so I didn’t want to have to train myself to stop when I first started.
This is the part where I tell you that being vegan is not easy. It’s not that I want to eat a big bowl of tofu at every meal. I want to eat plant-based food every day. But I have to stop when I’m hungry. The problem is that I have to stop because that’s the only way I can eat vegan food. And that’s because Ive always been the vegetarian. My brother is a vegetarian.
As it turns out, veganism is a difficult habit to break and a lot of people are not aware that they are doing it wrong. Some vegans may feel they are making a choice to eat vegan. Some people may just want to eat as many different foods as possible. And some people will be perfectly fine with eating a few meatless meals a few days a week. But none of them should ever feel they have to go vegan at all.
The problem with veganism is that it can be very counterproductive to you and your health, and it can definitely be unhealthy. Veganism is a lot like a lot of other “diet” and eating habits, it may help you lose weight, but at the end of the day you’re still going to be eating all those “less” than you would otherwise. So the best thing to do is to try to identify your habits and see if you can change them.
I agree with your first point about the lack of self-awareness, but I don’t think it’s healthy to constantly have that kind of self-awareness. Your entire life is a mental process, but that doesn’t mean that you should not be doing what you’re supposed to do. Because your brain operates so much like a computer, you don’t always know what you’re doing. You may even be doing the wrong things, but you know you’re doing them right—all the time.
Sometimes I’d like to say something like “I love reading all your thoughts because it’s true”. But I dont like to be wrong, and I dont like to think that people should be wrong. If you really don’t have a problem with what you’re doing, then you dont deserve to be wrong.
Ive always wondered why people who dont speak much spanish or english would want to be vegan. It’s not for the food, it’s not for the taste, it doesnt have the calories and the fat. And it doesnt need to make you crazy. Maybe you just need to learn to like it as a food. Then you can be vegan.
